The breasts of male stonechats are orange-red, while their heads are black, their backs are brown, their throats are black with a white half-collar, and their backs are brown. Females and juveniles are paler. Stonechats are much darker than their close relative, the whinchats, and they do not have a white eyestripe or white patches at the base of their tails.
