Stonechats in the uplands leave their summer habitat in the fall and travel to the southwest and south. A select minority make their way to the Mediterranean, but the vast majority remain in Britain throughout the winter. Only the kingfisher, the grey wagtail, and the goldcrest fared worse than the stonechat during the horrible winter of 1962-1963. The stonechat was one of the species that was struck the worst of all.
