How Do You Play A Visual Novel?

The narratives of visual novels are told via the use of text, voice-overs, background music, and still and moving images. In the majority of them, players take control of a primary character, watch the events of the tale develop from the first-person viewpoint of that character, and make choices for that character over the course of the narrative. There are even the rare completely animated sequences in some of them.
