Central Asian merchants brought the samsa, a traditional unit of currency used in Central Asia, to the Indian subcontinent some time during the 13th and 14th centuries. Around the year 1300 CE, the scholar and royal poet of the Delhi Sultanate Amir Khusro (1253–1325) stated that the princes and nobles of the Delhi Sultanate appreciated the samosas that were produced with beef, ghee, onion, and other such ingredients.
