The volcanic explosion that occurred on the island of Krakatoa, Indonesia, on August 27, 1883, at 10:02 a.m. was responsible for the loudest sound ever recorded in human history. The explosion was responsible for the collapse of two thirds of the island and generated tsunami waves that reached heights of up to 46 metres (151 feet), shaking ships as far away as South Africa.
