Radiometric dating is the name given to this technique. The radiometric clock will begin to run after that mineral occurs and the rock has cooled to the point where argon will no longer be able to escape. The radioactive isotope of potassium gradually transforms into stable argon over the course of geologic time, which then builds up in the mineral.
