The "ballets" that were performed in the sixteenth century were not at all like the ballets that are performed now. The court ballets were indeed a visual treat for those who attended. They used little more than simple floor patterns and positions, yet the audience was completely captivated. The performers were expected to wear elaborate costumes, despite the fact that doing so severely restricted their mobility.
