To activate the microphone, "flip" it forward by giving it a little push. When the mic is unmuted, a tone of varying pitch (low to high) will be audible. When the microphone is completely advanced forward, it will "lock" into place and remain in that position. To silence the microphone, just turn it around so that the back is facing you.
