In contrast to the more vibrant colours of Eastern Whip-poor-wills, Common Nighthawks have a brownish-gray coloration that is paler. They also have white bars on their wings, something that whip-poor-wills do not have, and they are considerably more often to be seen in broad daylight, in open places, and higher in the sky than whip-poor-wills are.
