A definition of the four-letter term. In the year 1598, the term "f" first appeared in a dictionary (John Florios A Worlde of Wordes, London: Arnold Hatfield for Edw. Blount). It is a derivative of the Latin word futuere, which meant to hit or pierce, and the Old German word ficken or fucken, which meant the same thing but had the slang connotation of "to copulate."
