What Does Multiplicity Mean In NMR?

In a nutshell, the presence in an NMR spectrum of a set of symmetric peaks that collectively reflect a single hydrogen is referred to as multiplicity. Coupling is another name for this phenomenon. When a proton couples, the number of hydrogens that are next to it drops by one, bringing the total number of peaks in a multiplet to its lowest possible value.
