What Does It Mean When Google Is Verifying Your Phone Number For Chat Features?

This is intentional, according to a section of Google's Help Center, which states: We will periodically check to ensure that your phone number belongs to you by doing a re-verification. This is done for your protection. It's possible that the notification will say something along the lines of "Google is now confirming the phone number associated with this device."
