A proximity sensor's output stage can be either analogue or digital. Voltage (usually 0-10 Vdc) or current analogue versions are available (4-20 mA). They usually send out a linear signal, allowing for distance measurements of up to approximately 2 inches. Digital outputs are intended for usage in either dc-only or ac/dc circuits.
