Google said in October that it will begin the process of transferring everyone from Hangouts to Chat in the first half of 2021, and that it would automatically move Hangouts chats, contacts, and stored history. This announcement was made. In the latter half of 2018, Classic Hangouts will be discontinued, and all users will eventually be moved over to Google Chat.
