Radiocarbon dating is based on a straightforward principle: while all living organisms take in carbon from the air and the food sources that are around them, they also take in a certain amount of the naturally occurring radioactive form of carbon-14. When the plant or animal passes away, they are no longer able to absorb radioactive carbon, but the radioactive carbon that they have acquired will continue to decay after their passing.
