Take a seat next to your buddy, and explain everything that's going on. Pick a location that is calm and reasonably private so that they may respond freely without feeling embarrassed (there may be tears). It is all too simple to misread a letter or email, so you should make an effort to speak to them in person or at the very least over the phone. Make an effort to be kind, but be firm.
