In 1976, the year Apple was established, several firms picked names for their businesses that would place them towards the beginning of the phone book. Jobs said in a presentation that they chose the name Apple in part because of his like for apples and in part "because Apple is ahead of Atari in the phone book and I used to work at Atari."
